Thanks to Mark for an excellent blog post regarding the importance of science literacy. I have frequently found when talking with groups with disparate views that scientific information coupled with a dose of metacognition regarding how we often know what we know based upon the cultures to which we belong (what Dan Kahan refers to as "cultural cognition") can open minds and be a great discussion starter. It's as if people intrinsically know cultural cognition is at work, if not for themselves then for many they know. it often levels the playing field between those who acknowledge anthropogenic climate change and deniers or skeptics. Best of all, it's the most effective method I have found in 12 years of talking about climate to get people to listen to the scientific evidence – truly listen. Climate change without knowledge of the scientific evidence is a bit like the ol' "if a tree falls in the forrest..." debate. Knowledge of the scientific cause and consequences doesn't ensure meaningful and needed policy, but without science literacy on this and other critical issues, I fear meaningful and needed policy will never materialize.
